On January 15, 2026, we gave our AI agent a simple task: organize two business proposals, synthesize the content, close the ticket. Twenty minutes of work, tops.
Instead, the agent re-read files it had already processed. It created documents in the wrong directory. It failed to check its own work for the exact violation pattern it was supposed to be preventing. Six failures in a single session. A comedy of errors — except the comedy was being recorded, hashed, and committed to an immutable ledger.
In a normal company, that’s a bug report and a frustrated engineer. In CANONIC, it was four patent filings.
The Beautiful Irony
The agent’s job was to document “useful work violations” — patterns where AI systems waste compute by doing unnecessary work. And while documenting those violations, it committed them. It re-read files it had just summarized. It wrote outputs before checking inputs. It repeated the same mistake three times without noticing.

Systemic repetition. The same violation happened three times. Once is an error. Twice is a pattern. Three times is a structural deficiency — the cause isn’t behavior but the absence of a runtime check.
Each pattern was filed as an Invention Disclosure Form. Each IDF references specific commits with verifiable SHA hashes. Four pieces of intellectual property that didn’t exist before the agent broke.
The Fifth Discovery
The most valuable finding wasn’t any of the four patterns. It was this: the system had rules that should have caught each failure, but none were executing at runtime. The validators existed as specifications — elegant descriptions of what should happen — with no code behind them.
The system knew how to self-correct. It just wasn’t self-correcting.
That gap — between knowing the rule and enforcing it — is itself a patentable insight. And the system discovered it by failing to enforce its own governance. You can’t design that kind of recursive discovery. You can only build the conditions for it and have a framework that captures it when lightning strikes.
